Plasma TV vs. LCD television

If you are considering the purchase of a plasma television you undoubtedly know that plasma television displays images in a significantly high resolution than your old television. Plasma is idea for high definition television (HDTV) and receives and displays digital TV signals. You can buy a plasma television that will display images in 1024 x 1024 pixel resolution and 480i and 480p HD signals.

Another positive feature of plasma television is the ability to hang the television on the wall, using less floor space and getting the unit out of the way. Plasma televisions are light weight and the color is accurate. The plasma television is less prone to distortion even when you are watching the television at an angle or up close.

When compared to LCD (liquid crystal display) televisions you may think plasma television is pretty much the same. Like plasma television, LCD televisions have thin, flat screens. But the technology is quite different than plasma television. LCD televisions do not suffer from ‘burn in’ like plasma televisions. Fans of LCD say that the LCD screen displays with less glare, and that the screen life is longer. LCD televisions do not fade in rooms with bright light and they perform better in high altitudes and run cooler.  

On the flip side, LCD televisions use mercury to process images and you may not want mercury in your home. LCD and plasma television offer comparable HDTV reception and both provide impressive images. Both recommend professional installation and extended service packages to ensure good operation over the life of the unit.  

Every new television technology has its tradeoffs and fans. In the end, the choice is up to you. You will have to consider price, maintenance, installation and the quality of the image and make your own decision. Both plasma television and LCD technology have improved over the years and both provide dependable and impressive operation.
